SEATBELTS FOR EMPLOYEES - FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

Pursuant to Iowa Code 2003: Section 321.445, #2:

"The driver and front seat occupants of a type of motor vehicle (1966 model year or newer) which is subject to registration in Iowa, except a motorcycle or a motorized bicycle, shall each wear a properly adjusted and fastened safety belt or safety harness any time the vehicle is in forward motion on a street or highway in this state except that a child under six years of age shall be secured under section 321.446."

This subsection does not apply to:

"the driver and front seat occupants of a motor vehicle who are actively engaged in work which requires them to alight from and reenter the vehicle at frequent intervals, providing the vehicle does not exceed twenty-five miles per hour between stops."

As a result of the aforementioned Iowa State Law, it shall be the policy of the University of Northern Iowa Facilities Management that seatbelts shall be required to be used at all times by the driver and front seat occupants during operation of all University vehicles. The only Facilities Management employees that are exempt from this seatbelt policy are the Motor Vehicle Operator II’s while, in the course of their job duties, they are making frequent stops to adjacent buildings on or near campus.  Seatbelts shall be required to be worn at all other times.

Gators/golf carts are not subject to registration in the state of Iowa, and as such, are not required to have seat belts.
